Dave Chappelle refused to tell jokes during a stand-up performance at Alonzo Mourning’s Summer Groove Charity Event in Miami last night, instead checking text messages and leading audience members to boo and heckle.
It’s not entirely clear what went wrong, but Chappelle was reportedly irritated by fans who were recording him and addressed them instead of doing his routine.
CNN contributor Roland S. Martin was there and live tweeted the confusion.
“This Dave Chappelle set is bizarre. He’s spent more time going back & forth with one audience member, & pretty much stopped telling jokes,” wrote Martin.
“I’m just not understanding what threw him off. He’s complained about folks videotaping his set, yelling out loud. I don’t get it.”
