It is easy to spit out numbers like this. Do you have independent proof of these? Please don't point us to LTTE run web sites. Provide hard proof if you can.
As for "formerly superior Tamil competitiveness", I am sure what you refer to is, the fact that during the British period, the Tamils were given the lion's share (pardon my pun) of all the civil service and other administrative jobs as part of their divide and Rule policy. When SL gained independence of course, things changed so that formerly discriminated Sinhalese started getting their fair share of thse opportunities. Mind you that Sinhalese are after all 75% of SL. Are you saying it is fair to ask 12% of the population (SL Tamils) to have 50% of all the opportuniies and land and the resources reserved for them???

I got mine approved 2 months back from countrywide with out any issues.and I got good interest rate too.
Has anybody really tried to get a mortgage recently? I have been denied by 8 lenders so far simply because I don't have a green card. Most lenders have tightened their underwriting guidelines. They will give mortgages only to U.S.Citizens or somebody who is a permanent resident aka having a green card. There are very very few lenders who will give mortgages to somebody on a visa and the rates may not be very favorable.

No one is arguing that lot of EB1Cs do not deserve the classification, however; that is not the root cause why we are backlogged. You might get 1000more visas , you would think but at the end of the day , you will close that gateway as well. 1000 EB1 visas are not a major relief for us. And if you think that will resolve the issue, you are mistaken.
There is a political decision to backdate the country dates and hence even if you take up Eb1 issue, they will close that line as well, but those visas will not translate into more visas for us. Bureaucrats can come up with gazillion excuses as to why spillover did not happen such as "there is now demand for religious workers".

I have send all paper on 12th of oct they received on 15th.
By when can i expect a letter that they have received it.
how do i know they have received it other than fedex confirmation.

Please stop responding to Dilip. He is feeding of our frustrations. If he was still retrogressed he would be singing a different tune but never mind. Every response we give him makes him feel pleasure at our plight. To tell you the truth our plight is not bad. We just like to think it is. We have AC21 option. Remember when you could not file I485 how much you coveted that one option. If the employer withdraws I-140 and we have to file MTR so be it. People come out of it unscathed. It is still a low probability event. Take the bull by the horns and you will come out stronger. Even when you get your GC life's problems will not go away. We still have to fight for a better job, better pay, better quality of living and then we will not have the excuses we have now (Thats how Dilips of the USA are made).
So lets take pride in ourself, use our options wisely and ignore people like Dilip. He is just pampering him shattered pride by telling himself we cannot get the salary he wants due to H1b , outsourcing .... . He is not worth it.

Dear Friends, I had it... I am moving to Canada in the next 2 months to work for guess who? Microsoft. Came to USA in 1997 for my masters, worked at Legato, Documentum and Opentext. Had to restart my GC twrice, once as the company laid me off and next for career progression. GC is still years years away. Interviewed with MSFT last month and got an offer to work in their Enterprise Collaboration team. MSFT looked at the visa mess I was in and offered me to work in Vancouver. I get my Canadian GC in 6 months and my wife can work from day one. I am abandoning my US dream for good;guess I would be satisfied with touching my 4 year old son's American passport.
I worked for a canadian company in US and now would be working for a US company in Canada. This is globalization. True Globalization. Any for those whiners belonging to IEEE and its propoganda machine, I would like to mention that I drew salries which were above way above the norm. I am sure I would be drawing more than 2 of his programmers combined. Ron- ask your folks to learn to compete and update their skills. They probably studied studied 'history of mathematics' as a math subject in high school instead of calculus. They were happy that they had the coolest Nintendo games while many like me were burning the midnight old figuring out data structures at Berkeley.
I hope Berney Sanders and his club of the CIR days are hearing the developments. Berney, fix the broken education system for job protection rather than building fences to prevent legal workers to come to this gifted country. More companies will leave for nearshore if the mess continues. Fix the system by closing the H1B loopholes that a small percentage of companies are exploiting. Don't bad mouth the H1B system which has given you so much talent that you could have never groomed, the talented individuals who have contributed to the society, social security system and what not. Patch the holes in the fence, do not erect a higher fence for which people need to pay $ 5000 to cross. Body shops aka desi dallas have bad business practices as someone just mentioned - all they do is provide a TAX ID.....nothing else.
You have to find a project on your own, no pay on bench, no proper office space - renting 2 rooms doesn't make a company, no benefits or medical insurance. Since an H1-B person requires an employer to do paper work - that is all what they do.
As someone just mentioned, this rule is not against H1-Bs but against such ppl who have bad business practices. Not all desi dallas are bad - 10-15% are good also.

Stop the bashing of countries with stupid generalizations like cost of living and bad doctors. This is ridiculous. See my other posts dispelling Canadian misconceptions. That your friends or whoever has had badluck in Canada is probably as much due to their lack of perperation and research before going there coupled with their socialist sense of entitlement.
And for all you considering going to Canada, it's not rocket science. Look for a job BEFORE you go. Heck, take a vacation and go there if you get some interviews. I don't care if your doctor friend is driving a taxi cab - they should have known that there is a foreign credential issue going on in that country before they pack up their family and go there (and hopefully this will be ironed out - it is a problem and a big debate right now).
But it's not like there isn't a way to work around it (suck it up and do what you have to do for recertification - yes it's troublesome, but at least your fate is in your own hands, and you're not stuck in retrogression at the mercy of others). And if you think you have more opportunities in the US, why is it that the majority of H1Bs are being sucked up by desi body shops who just turn around and indenture you? Is that considered a wonderful opportunity ( i guess it is)? How many of you can actually work for a non-desi company? Imagine if they didn't exist. Too bad Canada doesn't have the same body shops, eh. Oh the irony.
It boggles my mind that people take up and leave to a country without actually looking into the job market or thinking everything would be hunky dory. There's something called the internet. Look for Canadian jobs, apply, get feedback, attend job fairs in Canada, tap your networks, etc. If you can't find something, DON'T GO.

There is difference between a common man and a celebrity. We did make noise about Abdul Kalam and Fernandez when the news came out. I think SRK was right to make an issue out of it.
I have been through secondary once and frisked about 4-5 times as a "singled out" case. Man I hated it, whole flight was watching what was going on. What if I make an issue? It will be dismissed as everyone goes through it.
When I went for secondary exam , I was released with 5 mins of questioning but was made to wait 30 mins. The secondary officer was nice, but the primary inspection officer was really mean. She picked on me coz I was smiling in the queue and talking to other people. and I laughed at the jokes cracked by other immigration officers.
3 out of 4 frisking incidents were insensitive and derogatory.
But voice of celebrity has more credence to it.

Good summary but let me also add the observation that eliminating the per country quota alone will not bring the desired benefit unless the following are also implemneted
1) Increase of the total EB quota
2) Exclude dependents from the quota
3) Re-capture unused visas from past years.
--Improve processing time to consume full quota allotted per fiscal year. If the cases are processed at snail pace, increasing quota to half a million visa doesn't mean squat to anybody. It will fall into another cycle of "waste visas & recapture visas"

We do not have to spend our energy and time answering each and every post of theirs. they do not deserve our time nor they are intelligent enough to rationalise.
I and a couple of us have been repeatedly telling that we do not want ROW people to be affected nor we want country quota to be removed, but they have been targetting our race, our country, it has jealously writ all over... I doubt it. My sense is that USCIS has already processed most of EB2-I cases until early 2004 - based on approval trend seen on IV, Murthy Forum, and a ton of personal friends. If it goes back it may go back to Fall 2004 time frame.

Question for Lawyer or Senior Members of Forum:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I myself is currently in H1B and my wife on H4. We both have EAD and AP which we�re never activated since we had our H1 and H4 and my wife has not started working.
She should be starting work very soon and hence we would like to renew her EAD and AP. Also as part of her new job she needs to travel oustide US. So the question I had is whether she can travel outside US on her currenty valid AP with the application for renewal of AP/EAD in processing with USCIS.

Now, what would really be effective is for our own people that are already naturalized and integrated and assimilated and digested in the US system to stand up for our cause.
Please, do this for us seniors. As citizens and permanent residents, your voice will be effectively heard. Case in point - legislation on re-uniting families. To begin with, family based has nearly 60% more visas than employment based and nearly 80% of the visas available are exempt from per-country limits. And yet, the politicians want to reform family based immigration process because the people at the receiving end are their citizens. There is nothing wrong with it because the wait-time for extended family members are really long too which is a shame. Why is Mr. Bobby Jindal and likes of him not taking up our cause actively? People use their "humble-background" in campaign times. Why do they fail in holding out a helping hand to people that are stuck in such "humble-background"? Do you see such apathy in other minority communities?

Forget those who got citizenship, even those who got GC turn a blind eye to the immigration issues and people still in line.
I can bet most of the GC and USC guys/gals would want us to just leave and stay away from USA :D
Tough luck pal..this is a dog eat dog world..and especially so with our guys/gals who are brought up in the rat race culture right from childhood...

I a will be happy if GC and USC guys/gals dont step up and start demanding no more visas and Indians in this country...i bet some are already supporting numbersusa and such groups...i know a lot of ppl who hates seeing a fellow desi at work/park/vacation/shopping..

Life is hard as it is...people here are on a common cause and helping each other..some need a channel to vent their frustation, some need a suggestion, some are paranoid, some are vigilantes, some are good samaritans... give them a GC or USC and wait for a while and see if they still support the cause...
Help each other and we can all prosper...guess it may remain a dream afterall

Please, do this for us seniors. As citizens and permanent residents, your voice will be effectively heard. Case in point - legislation on re-uniting families. To begin with, family based has nearly 60% more visas than employment based and nearly 80% of the visas available are exempt from per-country limits. And yet, the politicians want to reform family based immigration process because the people at the receiving end are their citizens. There is nothing wrong with it because the wait-time for extended family members are really long too which is a shame.
